Out of the hive

Final thoughts and reflection on The Secret Life of Bees

First off, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with this project! Initially, I was worried about the amount of time and skill it would take to create a well thought out blog. However, I definitely think I have greatly improved my writing skills, especially analytical writing. Ms. Fasolino (my English teacher) was right all along! Blog writing is a perfect way to develop the writing skills needed for a strong and sophisticated analysis essay.

Personally, I LOVED The Secret Life of Bees. Even from the beginning of the novel, the text was captivating and brilliant. The heavily emphasized motif of bees throughout the book is something that I particularly loved while reading. In chapter one Lily is swarmed by bees in her bedroom. She frantically runs to her father seeking aid from him, but when they get back to her room the bees are no longer there. Lily then makes an attempt to prove to her father that she wasn’t lying by catching bees in jar. I believe this represents the constant struggle Lily went through during her childhood to try and prove her worth to her father. When Lily finally realizes that she will never be worthy in her father’s eyes in chapter eight, however, it is already too late. She becomes overwhelmed and compares her life to “a hive of darkness” (Kidd 163). The “darkness” of the world is consuming her and she can’t seem to find a way out (Kidd 163). The journey Lily goes through in the book shows her gradually veering away from the darkness and finally escaping into the light. When T-Ray discovers Lily at the Boatwright house she refuses to go home. I believe that Lily is choosing her destiny, and walking into the light, out of the “hive” that she grew up in. Lily chooses love over hatred, because “every little thing wants to be loved” in the end (Kidd 62).

I learned from this book that it is important in life to find love and support . Choose the path and destiny that is right for you. Walk out of your hive of darkness.

This is my FINAL blog! 🙂 Thanks for reading to the end!
